Costume Tour: Sailor Moon

Costume Tour: Sailor Moon

Hey everyone! I’m excited to share a closer look at my Sailor Moon cosplay, which won second place at ValleyCon 2017. This project is close to my heart because, although I bought the wig and boots, I sewed all the major components of the costume myself. This was one of the first times I'd ever done that!

Here’s a breakdown of how I brought Sailor Moon to life!

Let’s start with the wig, an essential piece to any Sailor Moon cosplay. I used the “Odongo Justice Moon Princess” wig from Five Wits Wigs. The odongo (Sailor Moon’s iconic hair buns) were a fun challenge—I customized them with poured resin on top of foam for the perfect shape. The little feather clips were also handmade from white clay and rhinestones, which I glued onto combs to attach easily.

Next up is the costume itself. The top layer consists of a separate shirt made from two layers of spandex, which gives it a snug but comfortable fit. The Sailor collar is made from costume satin and bias tape, attached with snaps for easy removal—perfect for cleaning after a long day at a con! One of my favorite parts of the costume is the bows. I used a lot of interfacing to make sure they stood up perfectly, and I’m really happy with how they turned out.

Moving down, the leotard is one of the more intricate parts of the costume. I created the waist roll using upholstery foam wrapped in fabric, giving it just the right amount of volume. To get the skirt looking fresh, I spritz it with water and let it air dry before wearing it.

For the boots, I went with a pair of women's 300 Super Boots. Though I didn’t make the boots, they were a perfect fit for the costume.

Of course, no Sailor Moon cosplay is complete without her accessories! The tiara is crafted from Worbla, and the choker combines foam, ribbon, and clay. I used plastic gemstones throughout for that extra sparkle. Since I don’t have pierced ears, I made clip-on earrings from foam, rhinestones, and clay. Finally, the brooch on the chest bow pulls everything together, and I’m proud of the handmade details.

Though the gloves were purchased, I customized them by adding padded red embellishments at the elbows to match the bows. I’m really proud of how cohesive the entire look turned out.

I’m looking forward to wearing this cosplay again at Bakkencon (6 years later), and I hope you’ll stay tuned for more updates on my other cosplay projects. Make sure to check out my blog for more resources and links to the wig and boots if you’re working on your own Sailor Moon cosplay!
